🩺 How to use a manual sphygmomanometer
A manual sphygmomanometer is an essential tool for accurately measuring blood pressure. It consists of an inflatable cuff, a valved pump, a pressure gauge, and often a stethoscope. This type of measurement requires practice but provides reliable and detailed results.
1. Preparation
- Quiet environment : Make sure the person is sitting comfortably, with their arm resting on a flat surface at heart level.
- Avoid stimulants : It is advisable not to drink coffee or smoke at least 30 minutes before the measurement.
- Relaxation : The person should rest for at least 5 minutes before measurement.
2. Positioning the bracelet
- Wrapping the cuff : Place the cuff around your bare arm, about 2-3 cm above the bend of your elbow.
- Correct alignment : Make sure the cuff tube is aligned with the brachial artery.
- Fit : The cuff should be snug but not too tight; you should be able to fit a finger between the cuff and your arm.
3. Using the stethoscope
- Placement : Place the diaphragm of the stethoscope over the brachial artery, just below the lower edge of the cuff.
- Earphones : Insert the stethoscope earphones into your ears, making sure they are securely seated.
4. Inflating the cuff
- Closing the valve : Make sure the pump valve is closed.
- Inflation : Pump until you reach about 30 mmHg past the point where you can no longer hear the heartbeat through the stethoscope.
5. Blood pressure measurement
- Slow pressure release : Open the valve slightly to let air flow out at a rate of approximately 2-3 mmHg per second.
-
Listening to Korotkoff sounds :
- The first audible sound indicates systolic pressure .
- The point where the sound disappears indicates the diastolic pressure .
6. Recording of values
- Note : Write down your systolic and diastolic blood pressure values, for example 120/80 mmHg.
- Repeat : If the values seem abnormal, wait a few minutes and repeat the measurement.
